Really wonderful Navajo sodalite carving by Herbert Davis (signed H. Davis). Two bears, a mother and her cub are playing. The large piece of sodalite, sometimes confused with lapis, is richly varied in mineral content. The two bears have inlaid jet eyes.
The carving measures 3″L x 1.5″W x 2.5″H.

The carver brings forth his vision from the stone. The bears come alive through this seeing into the material to reveal the bears waiting to emerge. Fantastic!
On a personal note, we have seen these bears playing exactly as depicted in the carving. Herbert must have seen them, too.
