Description
Santo Domingo Pueblo (Kewa) Depression Era necklace, circa 1930s. These necklaces were mostly made from found materials such as discarded plastics, combs, old plastic handled serveware and utensils as well as gypsum from a nearby mine. The turquoise almost always came from the Cerrillos turquoise mine which was not far away. The bird pendant is quite distinctive with his center eye and polka dot trim. This necklace speaks to the resourcefulness of the Kewa people during the Great Depression.
